By chance, I happened across a large volume of old topographic maps. This gave me an idea for a map show...my first idea was about internal terrain, using quotes about travel and internal searching, etc. I was doing some deep soul searching when I happened across an old children's book of Snow White.
This is where it gets interesting. The book is a BIG LITTLE book, full of small illustrations of different scenes from the story. I thought this tale would be a good metaphor for travel as Snow White goes on something of a journey, as does the evil queen in the story, though hers is more of an internal struggle for power. Then, as I was looking through some of my downloaded images, I found one of a small green Buddha with a quote: "All that we are is the result of what we have thought. The mind is everything. What we think we become."
This quote gave me the idea: an exploration of the Snow White fairy tale through the lens of Buddhism, or quotes attributed to the Buddha. This perspective will both comment and question the journey Snow White is on, the mind set of both the Queen and Snow White, and talk broadly about the nature of navigating the internal landscape.
I am hanging my show in a week and my opening is on the fifth of July. Great things are happening here.
